Sex Superbug : H041

  • There’s a new superbug out there and experts fear it’s going to be deadlier than AIDS.
  • In April, 2013 two cases of the “sex superbug” have been found in Hawaii.
  • The superbug, which is an antibiotic-resistant strain of gonorrhea, has the potential to be as deadly or even deadlier than AIDS.
  • The new strain of gonorrhea is known as H041 & it was first discovered in 2009 in Japan after a sex worker fell victim to the superbug.
  • Since it resists current antibiotic treatment, the strain has been placed in the superbug category with other resistant bacteria, such as MRSA and CRE.
  • It is to be noted that Gonorrhea is a common human sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria Gonorrhoeae, with over 700,000 cases in the United States each year.
  • The gonorrhea strain has not yet claimed any lives, but the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have asked Congress for $54 million to find an antibiotic to treat the strain.
