Avinash Chander is new DRDO Chief


  • On 1st June 2013, ministry of Defence, Government of India has appointed Avinash Chander as the new chief of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • Apart from the posts of Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister and Director-General of DRDO, he will also hold the post of Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development.
  • He succeeded V. K. Saraswat, whose term ended on 31st May, 2013.
  • Before taking over as the DRDO chief, he was the chief controller in charge of missiles and strategic systems at DRDO headquarters.
  • Avinash Chander is an eminent missile scientist and he is considered to be the key architect of the long range ballistic missile system Agni.
  • He played a key role in the development of the 5,000 km range Agni-V, propelling India into an elite club of five advanced nations.
  • In recognition of his success, Chander was awarded the Padma Shri on Republic Day this year.
