  • The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is a large military transport aircraft.
  • It was developed for the United States Air Force (USAF) from the 1980s to the early 1990s by McDonnell Douglas.
  • Boeing, which merged with McDonnell Douglas in the 1990s, continues to manufacture C-17s for export customers following the end of deliveries to the U.S. Air Force.
  • On 2nd September, 2013 Defence Minister AK Antony formally inducted its biggest 70-tonne C-17 heavy-lift transport aircraft into service at a formal ceremony at the Hindon Air Base (UP).
  • It will bolster Indian Air Force’s capability to swiftly transport combat troops and equipment such as tanks to the front,
  • The aircraft is designed to rapidly dispatch a payload of 70 tonnes across a range of 4200 kilometers.

  • The C-17 will replace the Russian IL-76 as the biggest aircraft in the Indian Air Force (IAF) inventory till now.
  • It is to be noted that The IL-76 has the capability to carry loads up to around 40 tonnes.
  • The government accorded approval to buy 10 C-17 Globemaster III along with associated equipment for the IAF in June 2011 and three of them have already been delivered.
  • The total cost of the ten-plane order is US$ 4.1 billion, and it will make IAF the second-largest C-17 operator after US.
  • The first of the 10 aircraft touched down in India on 18th June 2013 and the delivery of all 10 is expected to be completed by November 2014.
  • This aircraft will enhance the operational potential of the IAF with its payload carriage and performance and would augment the strategic reach of the nation during Operations, Disaster Relief or any similar mission.
  • In recent times, the IAF has shifted its dependence from the Russian-origin aircraft towards the American ones with the induction of the C-17 and the C-130J Super Hercules transport planes.
  • The IAF operates six C-130Js and has plans of procuring six more for operations on small and unpaved runways alongside routine transport missions.
  • The force also has the Russian Antonov-32 in its inventory.
