Dadsaheb Phalke Awardee and Legendary Actor Pran Passed Away


  • Veteran Bollywood actor Pran Krishan Sikand popularly known as Pran, who made a mark for himself portraying strong negative and supporting roles, passed away at the age of 93 on 12th July, 2013 due to multi-organ failure after prolonged illness.
  • The actor passed away at the Lilavati hospital in Mumbai, where he was undergoing treatment.
  • The last rites of the actor were conducted at the Shivaji Park crematorium in Mumbai on 13th July.
  • Pran got his first break in a Punjabi Film, Yamla Jat in 1940, in the undivided India.
  • But his debut in Bollywood happened with the film Ziddi, in which he acted along with the evergreen hero of bollywood Dev Anand in 1948.
  • Pran has been known for remarkable roles in Bollywood hits like Zanjeer, Don, Amar Akbar Anthony, among hundreds others.
  • In a long and prolific career he appeared in over 350 films.
  • In 2001 Government of India conferred India’s third highest civilian award the Padma Bhushan on him.
  • Recently, he was conferred with Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the most prestigious award of the Indian cinema, presented by the Government of India.
  • Due to his deteriorating health, he was unable to attend the 60th National Film Awards Ceremony in May 2013 where he was to be presented with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, hence presented to him at his residence in Mumbai by Information and broadcasting minister Manish Tewari.
