Lakulish Yoga University: India’s First Private Yoga University


  • On 23rd May 2013 Gujarat’s Chief Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Lakulish Yoga University in Ahmedabad.
  • It is claimed to be the first ever such private sector self-financed institution in the country.
  • Lakulish Yoga University, in a lotus-shaped building, has been set up by the Surendranagar-based Life Mission Trust that is headed by a former BJP minister I K Jadeja.
  • It is to be noted that this trust already runs several yoga training centres across the State as well as in Canada and Mauritius.
  • The university is situated on the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar Highway on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.
  • This university will offer a 3-year six-semester degree course in Yoga to students aged 15-35 in which they will be taught subjects of Ashtang Yoga, Karma, knowledge, Bhakti Yoga, philosophy, psychology, anatomy, Ayurveda and naturopathy.
  • There will also be short term courses for senior citizens.
  • It is to be noted that the state government had earlier enacted a law for creation of a Yoga university in the state.
  • Bansidhar Upadhyay has been appointed the vice chancellor of the university.
