  • National Sports Awards are given every year to recognize and reward excellence in sports.
  • On 31 August, 2013 President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee conferred the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Dronacharya Awards, Arjuna Awards, Dhyan Chand Awards,Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy and Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar at a specially organised function at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi.
  • The felicitation usually takes place on the National Sports Day (Aug 29) but it was postponed because of sports minister Jitendra Singh’s unavailability.
  • This year the Selection Committee for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Arjuna Awards was headed by Shri Michael Ferreira and other members of the Committee from the sports fraternity were Shri Limba Ram, Shri V. Devarajan, Shri Zafar Iqbal, Ms. Vandana Rao, Ms. Anjali M. Bhagwat, Ms. Indu Puri, ShriShakti Singh, Shri Ravi Shastri, Shri Kripa Shankar Patel and Shri Surinder Khanna.
  • The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna is India’s highest honour given for achievement in sports.
  • Apart from a medal and a citation, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awardee receives a cash prize of Rs.7.5 lakh.
  • Double trap shooter Ronjan Sodhi was conferred upon the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna for the year 2012-13.
  • Sodhi became the seventh shooter after Abhinav Bindra (2001-02), Anjali Bhagwat (2002-03), Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (2004-05), Manavjit Singh Sandhu (2006-07), Gagan Narang (2010-11) and Vijay Kumar (2011-12) to be honoured with the prestigious award.
  • Interestingly, it is for the third consecutive year that the Khel Ratna award has gone to a shooter.
  • Cricketer Virat Kohli was one of the 15 Arjuna Awardees.
  • It was a memorable day for Nagaland archer Chekrovolu Swuro, who became first Arjuna Awardee from the north-eastern state.

  • Among the arjuna awardees, the notable absentees from the function were shuttler P.V. Sndhu and triple jumper Renjith Maheshwary.
  • Sindhu was in Mumbai for the Indian Badminton League final while Maheswary missed the event despite being in town, following doubts over his eligibility for the award.
  • He was tested positive for a banned substance in an athletics meet held in Kochi in 2008 and according to the ministry guidelines, a dope offender can’t be chosen for the award.
  • This year’s Dronacharya Award, the top recognition for coaches in the country, was conferred on five people.
  • The award comprises a bronze statuette of Dronacharya, a scroll of honour and a cash component of Rs.500, 000.

  • Dhyan Chand Award is India’s highest award for lifetime achievement in sports and games, given by the Government of India.
  • The award is named after the legendary Indian hockey player Dhyan Chand.
  • The award was initiated in 2002.
