P Sathasivam to be new Chief Justice of India



  • P. Sathasivam is a seniormost judge of the Supreme Court of India.
  • On 30 June 2013 President Pranab Mukherjee designated Justice P Sathasivam as the new Chief Justice of India to succeed Justice Altamas Kabir on July 19.
  • Sathasivam, who will be the 40th CJI, will have tenure till April 26, 2014.
  • Justice Sathasivam, 64, is the first judge from Tamil Nadu to become the CJI.
  • A string of important cases were decided by him as a Judge of the Supreme Court, most recent being the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts case and the fight between Ambani brothers over division of natural gas reserves.
  • In the Mumbai blasts case, Justice Sathasivam convicted Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt to five years imprisonment under the Arms Act and he was asked to serve out the remaining sentence.
